Footscray Meadows 16th August 2019

Warning – distressing images

The swan family at Footscray meadows were viciously attacked by a dog last Friday whilst the cob bravely defended his mate and cygnets he was badly injured and had to come to the sanctuary for an operation. He is unlikely to be able to returned to the wild. PLEASE keep you dog under control near wildlife. We are often told ‘my dog has never done this before’, that is no comfort for the dead or injured bird. Any dog’s hunting instinct can be triggered for no apparent reason.

Update 23rd August 2019 It is with great sadness that the swan succumbed to his injuries today. We have contacted Bexley Council to see what can be done to address the problem.
